Travertine Stone Story Roman Colosseum Hot Springs Oceania India Sink

Hot Springs, Carbon Bubbles and the Stone That Built the Roman Empire

In the hills of Tivoli, 30 kilometres east of Rome, natural hot springs have been pouring out of the earth for millions of years. As the mineral-rich water emerges from the ground and meets cooler air, it undergoes a chemical transformation — carbon dioxide gas escapes, and calcium carbonate precipitates out of the water, crystallising into a soft porous stone. Those escaping carbon dioxide bubbles leave behind the characteristic holes and channels that make travertine instantly recognisable.

The Romans’ Greatest Building Secret

The Romans understood travertine with extraordinary sophistication. They quarried it in enormous quantities from Tivoli — a site they called Tibur, which is why travertine in Italian is still sometimes called ‘travertino’ (from ‘lapis Tiburtinus’, the stone of Tibur). They built the Colosseum from it — over 100,000 cubic metres of travertine went into that single structure. They built aqueducts from it. They built temples, baths, entire city districts. They chose travertine not just for its beauty but because they knew its geological properties: it is strong, light relative to its strength, easy to carve, and improves with age.

Why Travertine’s ‘Imperfections’ Are Actually Its Greatest Asset

The pores and channels in travertine — left by those ancient carbon dioxide bubbles — are often filled with resin in modern bathroom applications to create a smooth surface. But in its natural state, these pores give travertine its most unique quality: a connection to its own formation process. When you look at travertine’s surface, you are looking at the path of carbon dioxide bubbles that escaped a hot spring, in some cases millions of years ago. These are not flaws. They are the stone’s autobiography.
