How Natural Marble is Formed - The 200 Million Year Journey to Your Bathroom
When you wash your hands in a marble sink, you are touching a material that took 200 million years to create. The extraordinary geological process that produces marble - from ancient seabed to polished luxury fixture - is one of the most fascinating stories in natural science. Understanding it deepens your appreciation of every piece.
Step 1: Ancient Ocean Floors
The story of marble begins 200-600 million years ago with limestone - a sedimentary rock formed from the accumulated shells and skeletons of marine creatures on ancient ocean floors. These calcium carbonate deposits built up over millions of years, forming thick layers of limestone.
Step 2: Heat and Pressure
As the earth's tectonic plates shifted, these limestone deposits were buried deep underground where they encountered extreme heat and pressure. This metamorphic process - the conversion of one rock type to another through heat and pressure - is called metamorphism. The calcium carbonate in the limestone recrystallised into the interlocking calcite crystals that give marble its characteristic texture and translucence.
Step 3: The Colours and Veining
Pure marble would be white - the colour of pure calcite crystals. The extraordinary colours and veining patterns that make marble so beautiful come from mineral impurities present during metamorphism. Iron oxides create the warm reds and pinks of Rosso Levanto marble. Carbon produces black marble. Serpentine minerals create green. Tiny cracks in the original limestone, filled with different minerals during metamorphism, become the distinctive veining.
Step 4: Uplift and Quarrying
Over millions of years, tectonic activity and erosion brought the marble back to the earth's surface where it could be quarried. The marble in your Oceania Washbasin sink was quarried by our team from carefully selected deposits, then transported to our manufacturing facility where 278 skilled artisans transformed it into the piece in your bathroom.
