How to Clean and Maintain a Marble Bathroom Sink — Expert Care Guide

How to Clean and Maintain a Marble Bathroom Sink — Complete Care Guide

A marble bathroom sink is one of the most beautiful fixtures you can have in your home. But natural marble is also a sensitive material that requires the right care to maintain its lustrous beauty. Follow this expert guide to keep your marble washbasin looking showroom-perfect for decades.

Daily Cleaning Routine

The easiest way to keep marble clean is a consistent daily routine. After each use, simply wipe the basin with a soft, damp microfibre cloth. This removes water droplets, soap residue and toothpaste splashes before they have a chance to dull the surface or cause etching.

  • Use only soft microfibre cloths — never abrasive scrubbers or steel wool

  • Dry the basin after every use to prevent water spots and mineral deposits

  • Use a pH-neutral, stone-safe soap — avoid harsh bathroom cleaners

What to NEVER Use on Marble

This is critical. The wrong cleaner can permanently etch your marble, dulling its finish and causing irreversible damage. Avoid these at all costs:

  • Acidic cleaners: lemon juice, vinegar, bleach, toilet bowl cleaners

  • Ammonia-based cleaners (e.g., glass cleaners like Colin)

  • Abrasive powders or scrubbing pads

  • Any cleaner not labelled 'safe for natural stone'

How to Remove Stains from Marble

Organic stains (coffee, tea, fruit): Apply a poultice of hydrogen peroxide (12%) mixed with a few drops of ammonia. Leave for 24 hours, then rinse thoroughly.

Oil-based stains (lotion, soap scum): Use acetone or mineral spirits on a cloth. Gently rub the stained area and rinse immediately.

Hard water deposits / white scale: Use a stone-safe calcium and limescale remover. Never use vinegar — it will etch the marble.

Sealing Your Marble Sink

The single most important maintenance step is sealing. A quality marble sealer penetrates the stone's pores and creates a protective barrier against stains, water absorption and etching. At Oceania Washbasin, all our sinks are pre-sealed before dispatch, but we recommend resealing every 12-24 months.

  1. Clean and dry the sink thoroughly

  2. Apply a stone sealer with a soft cloth in circular motions

  3. Leave for 20-30 minutes (as per product instructions)

  4. Buff off excess with a dry cloth

  5. Allow 24 hours before use
