Marble Pedestal Column History Greek Temple Rajasthan India Oceania Washbasin
3,000 Years of the Column: From Greek Temples to Your Rajasthan-Made Marble Pedestal
The column is the oldest human architectural element still in active use. It appears in ancient Egypt 5,000 years ago, in Bronze Age Minoan Crete, in the temples of ancient Greece and Rome, in Indian temple architecture from the Mauryan period onwards, in Islamic architecture, in Renaissance Europe, in colonial India, and in contemporary design studios worldwide. No other architectural element has this unbroken 5,000-year lineage.
The Column in Indian Architecture: A Parallel Tradition
While Greek architects were developing their classical orders (Doric, Ionic, Corinthian) in the 5th century BCE, Indian architects were simultaneously developing their own column traditions. The pillars of Ashoka — erected between 268 and 231 BCE — are among the finest stone columns ever made. The intricately carved columns of Rajasthan’s medieval temples, the soaring pillars of the Kailasa Temple at Ellora, the forest of columns in the Ranakpur Jain Temple — all express the same fundamental understanding: a column of stone elevates and dignifies whatever it supports.
The Pedestal Washbasin as Column
A pedestal washbasin is, in its essence, a column supporting a basin. Every great tradition of stone column-building culminates in this domestic application: the artisan’s hand, the stone’s geological history, and 5,000 years of architectural wisdom, expressed in a bathroom fixture that costs between ₹31,900 and ₹88,200. When Oceania’s artisans in Rajasthan carve a marble pedestal, they are working in a tradition that begins at the very dawn of human architecture.
