The Emperor’s Forbidden Stone: From Roman Imperial Property to Your Bathroom
At the height of the Roman Empire, the Emperor Augustus declared the Carrara marble quarries of Luna — near modern Carrara in Tuscany — to be Imperial property. Private citizens were forbidden from quarrying or trading in the stone without Imperial permission. Augustus said he found Rome a city of brick and left it a city of marble — and that marble was almost entirely from Carrara.
Michelangelo’s 40-Year Relationship with Carrara
Michelangelo spent more time in the Carrara quarries than anywhere else in his life. He was obsessed with selecting his own stone — climbing the quarry faces personally, tapping blocks with a hammer to assess their inner quality from the resonance, rejecting pieces that experts considered perfect because he could sense a flaw invisible to others. David was carved from a block of Carrara marble that two previous sculptors had abandoned as too difficult. Michelangelo could see past what others saw.
Why Carrara Marble is White
The extraordinary purity and whiteness of Carrara marble comes from its geological history. It formed from a very pure limestone in the Apuan Alps approximately 200 million years ago. The limestone was almost entirely calcium carbonate with very low iron, organic carbon or other mineral contamination. When metamorphic heat and pressure transformed it into marble, the purity of the original limestone translated directly into the purity of the marble. The subtle grey veining comes from microscopic graphite deposits — carbon that was trapped in tiny amounts during formation.
