The Lotus in Stone: Sacred Geometry, Divine Mathematics and the Most Auspicious Bathroom in India
In Sanskrit, the lotus is called Padma — and it occupies a unique position in Indian spiritual iconography shared by no other plant or symbol. It is the seat of Brahma, the Creator. It is the throne of Lakshmi, goddess of prosperity. It is the symbol of Vishnu’s creative power. The Buddha is depicted seated on a lotus. In Hindu thought, the lotus represents the highest state of consciousness — rootedness in the earthly combined with transcendence above it, just as the lotus grows from mud but flowers in pure light above the water.
The Ashtkon — Eight Directions, Eight Forces
The octagonal (Ashtkon) form has been central to Indian sacred architecture since the Vedic period. The eight sides represent the Ashta Disha — the eight directions of Vastu Shastra and of Indian cosmology: North, South, East, West and the four diagonal directions. Together they represent the totality of space. An octagonal form is considered to draw the positive energies of all eight directions simultaneously into a space, creating maximum auspiciousness.
Why Makrana White Marble is the Only Correct Material
In Vedic tradition, white is the colour of Satvic quality — purity, clarity, spiritual illumination. Makrana white marble, the stone of the Taj Mahal, is the most spiritually resonant stone in Indian tradition. It comes from the earth (Prithvi tattva — Earth element) and is white (Satva — purity). In Vastu Shastra, natural stone from the earth carries Prithvi tattva energy — the grounding, stabilising force of the Earth element. When the lotus motif, the Ashtkon form and Makrana white marble are combined in a single bathroom fixture, the result is the most Vastu-auspicious bathroom object available anywhere.
