The Night Sky Trapped in Stone: The Story of Nero Marquina Black Marble
To understand why Nero Marquina marble is black, you need to go to the bottom of a 300-million-year-old sea. The Basque region of Spain — where Nero Marquina is quarried near the town of Markina-Xemein — was once covered by a deep, oxygen-depleted sea. When marine organisms died and sank to this deep seafloor, their organic matter could not decompose in the usual way because there was no oxygen to drive decay.
Instead, the organic carbon was incorporated directly into the forming limestone. Carbon is black. The more organic carbon in the limestone, the darker it becomes. In the case of Nero Marquina, the deep-sea conditions were so oxygen-depleted and the organic accumulation so rich that the resulting stone is an intense, almost perfect black — the colour of a moonless night sky.
What the White Veins Really Are
The dramatic white veins that streak through Nero Marquina marble are calcite — the mineral form of calcium carbonate. In most cases, these white calcite veins are the literal remains of marine organisms: shells, coral fragments, foraminifera (tiny single-celled organisms with calcite shells). The white streaks in your black marble sink are the fossilised remains of creatures that lived in a Spanish sea 300 million years ago, their calcium carbonate shells recrystallised by geological pressure into brilliant white calcite.
