The Stone That Glows: How Onyx Learned to Capture Light
Deep inside limestone caves, in total darkness, one of the world’s most extraordinary geological processes unfolds. Water seeping through the limestone above carries dissolved calcium carbonate. Drop by drop, this mineral-rich water falls from cave ceilings and flows over cave floors. Each drop deposits a microscopic amount of calcium carbonate. Over hundreds, sometimes thousands of years, these deposits build up into banded stone of extraordinary purity.
This stone is onyx. And because it forms in thin bands — each band representing a period of mineral-rich water flow, laid down one microscopic layer at a time — the crystal structure is uniquely ordered. The crystals align in parallel bands of extraordinary regularity. This is the structural reason that light can pass through onyx when no other common natural stone allows it. The banded crystal structure acts almost like a series of aligned lenses, transmitting rather than absorbing light.
The World’s Oldest Luxury Material
Onyx has been a luxury material since before recorded history. Ancient Egyptians used it for vessels, jewellery and tomb objects — they called it a stone of protection and power. The ancient Greeks used it for carved cameos — the banded structure of onyx made it perfect for cameo carving because the artisan could carve through different coloured bands to create relief portraits. Medieval Europeans set thin slices of onyx in church windows as early translucent panels that glowed amber and honey in morning light. You are installing the world’s oldest luxury material in your bathroom.
The Makrana Onyx Connection
India’s own Makrana onyx — found in the same Rajasthan hills that produce the marble of the Taj Mahal — has its own distinct cave-formation history. The Aravalli mountain range, among the world’s oldest mountain systems at 2.5 billion years old, created the perfect cave and spring conditions for onyx formation. Indian onyx has been prized for centuries in Rajasthani craft traditions.
