Himalaya Rajasthan Marble Story India Geological Epic Oceania Sink
When the Himalaya Built Rajasthan: The Geological Epic That Created India’s Marble
Approximately 50 million years ago, the Indian subcontinent — which had been drifting northward across the ancient Tethys Sea for 70 million years — finally collided with the Eurasian plate. The impact was of almost incomprehensible force. Two continental masses, each thousands of kilometres across, crashing together at a few centimetres per year. The energy of this collision was so enormous that it is still happening today — the Himalayas are still rising, still pushed upward by the continuing collision of India and Eurasia.
What the Collision Did to Rajasthan’s Limestone
The limestone rocks of what is now Rajasthan — formed from marine sediments when the region was covered by the ancient Tethys Sea — had been sitting undisturbed for hundreds of millions of years. When the Himalayan collision began, the pressure waves moved through the crust like ripples in a pond. The rocks of Rajasthan experienced significant metamorphic heat and pressure from this distant but enormous geological event. The Aravalli mountain range — one of the world’s oldest mountain systems — was reactivated.
In the zones of highest metamorphic pressure, the limestone transformed into marble. The Makrana deposits — the quarries that have supplied white marble for Indian monuments for 2,000 years — occupy these metamorphic zones. In a very real geological sense, the Himalayan collision — the most dramatic geological event in Indian history — is responsible for every marble sink that Oceania makes in Rajasthan.
The Aravalli Range: 2.5 Billion Years Old
The Aravalli mountain range, which runs through Rajasthan, is estimated to be 2.5 billion years old — among the oldest mountain ranges on Earth. For context: the Himalayas are approximately 50 million years old, the Alps 15-35 million years old, the Rockies 80 million years old. The Aravallis were ancient mountains when the dinosaurs first appeared. The marble quarried from the rocks at their feet carries within it some of the oldest geological history on the planet.
Every Oceania Sink is a Fragment of This Epic Story
When you hold a piece of Oceania’s Makrana marble, you are holding a piece of rock that was formed in an ancient sea, buried under sediment for hundreds of millions of years, transformed by the heat and pressure of the Himalayan collision, quarried from mountains 2.5 billion years old, and shaped by Rajasthani artisans into a washbasin. The geological history of the Indian subcontinent is compressed into the stone in your bathroom.
