Why Granite Is The Stone of the Oldest Mountains on Earth — Red Granite Sink

The Foundation of Continents in Your Bathroom: The Story of Red Granite

The Indian subcontinent rests on a foundation of granite. This is not a metaphor — it is literal geological fact. The Deccan Plateau, the Aravalli Range, the Eastern and Western Ghats, the ancient bedrock of peninsular India — all are fundamentally granite. Granite is the igneous rock formed when magma cools slowly deep within the Earth’s crust, over millions of years, crystallising into a dense, interlocking matrix of quartz, feldspar and mica. It is the most common rock in the continental crust and, by most measures, the most durable natural material accessible at the Earth’s surface.

Why Red Granite is Red: The Iron Crystal Story

The red colour in granite comes from the potassium feldspar crystals within it — specifically, orthoclase and microcline feldspars, which contain trace amounts of iron that oxidise to produce warm red, salmon and pink tones. The more potassium feldspar, the redder the granite. Indian red granites, quarried in Karnataka, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu, have particularly high potassium feldspar content, producing some of the world’s most vibrant red granites. The crystals you see scattered through the stone are hundreds of millions of years old.

Granite vs Marble: Why Each Has Its Place

Granite is harder than marble — significantly so. Marble is 3-4 on the Mohs hardness scale; granite is 6-7. This means granite resists scratching and chipping more than marble and requires less maintenance. For a handmade vessel sink that will see daily use, red granite is an excellent choice — the beauty of natural crystal patterns, the organic quality of a handmade object, combined with the durability of one of the hardest natural materials available.
